Reclaiming "Express Service" charge?

On my previous loans, I have been charged say £35 taken off the first payment, to pay for "Express Service" to get the money into my account quicker. I don't ever remember agreeing or even being notified of this, and was only told about it with my Northern Rock loan because I'd been onto this site beforehand and asked specifically!

Have I just been cloth-eared or has everybody else paid an Express Service (or similarly named) charge without even knowing?

  • I imagine this is to pay for a CHAPS payment into your account - same day- but for a non NR customer?
They can't just charge for you without you either ticking a box or signing to say that you wanted it.
The alternative is for them to send you a cheque in the post which you have to take to your bank to pay in and then wait for it to clear.

    Your choice!

Yeah it is CHAPS instead of BACS. I did decline it with Northern Rock, only because I knew it existed from reading this site. I definitely wasn't asked previously. However previous loans have been with a bank where I was already a customer, so maybe I didn't get charged after all.

    More investigating....!
