Westcot Debt Collectors

HELP!

I'm posting on behalf of my brother. He had a debt with 3G (for around £300+) and it got passed onto Westcot in the end of December.

I believe he made a token payment to Westcot on 31st December and they told him they would phone him on 31st January for a further payment - which he agreed to

They phoned him yesterday (6:30pm) and asked him to pay £12 towards the debt, which he did via debit card.

He's gone to the bank today and found out he is £121 over his limit. His bank have told him that there is a pending payment of £286 to Wescot made at 9:30am yesterday morning!!! (ie 9 hours before they rang him to take a payment of £12)!

Bank have told him they have to let the payment go through, and have cancelled his card and passed it through to the fraud team, however the robbing gits have left him without a penny to his name til he next gets paid.

Any good suggestions on what he can do?

  • Phone wescot up and tell them the call was recorded and if the money is not refunded immediatly you will be informing the police.

    this is slightly worrying!!
i myself have dealings with westcot, and other DCA's and fear this will happen to me one day. when you give them your card details over phone, i assume they just type in in somewhere and not make a record to keep the details on file somewhere, unless you ask them to do. this transaction isnt authorised so they shouldnt have took it, and then the bank is stupid to let it go through should have declined it,when not enough sufficient funds to pay for it.
    good luck

A warning to everyone ! I would suggest to anyone who has made payments to a DCA by this method , to cancel there cards straight away . And to never deal with these people on the phone ! I will also be phoning my bank to preclude any payments to these companies .
  • Also use standing orders not direct debits as they can change the amounts.

  • He rang Westcot this lunchtime and they claim to have no knowledge of this payment being taken, and claim they have only taken the £12....yet A&L told him they could see the payment had been requested by Westcot....they just asked him politeley to ring back once the money had come out of his account and they'd discuss it further then!

He said that he had not a penny left, and they just said "ring back when it's left your account!" - even if it's a mistake, it will still be pending on his account for at least a few days. Poor lad - he just lurches from one disaster to another
