Thanks Stephen! I like shiney pies! Is that book good? It looks about my level (even though I'm not a bloke!)

    Thanks again

    You're welcome.

For shiny pies though, it does help to put the egg on the pastry instead of the floor. (I am going to get such a slapping at this rate, but then, some people pay good money for that sort of thing!)

There are three books - Cooking for Blokes, Foreign CfB and Flash CfB. They start at the absolute basics (CfB has 3 recipes for cheese on toast!), tell you everything you need to know and have a sense of humour. Also, if you need half a pack, can or bottle of some special ingredient for one recipe, there is another one that uses up the remainder. The recipes also build on each other. Add minced beef and an OXO cube to the basic Italian tomato sauce and you have Bolognese sauce. Add a white sauce to this and you have lasagne. I'd recommend them to anyone.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Thanks Stephen - ah yes - but now my floor is nice and shiny! :p

I will look out for those - off to eBay! I like the idea of receipes which use half packets up from another! :j

    Hi,

I'm in the middle of making a pie using up lots of bits and pieces from our freezer/fridge, making a beef and mushroom pie.

I've made the pastry and was just starting the filling when I have realised that I have no beef stock cubes, only vegetable or chicken!

Do you think I would be able to use beef gravy granules, and make a thin gravy instead of stock, maybe using 2 to 3 times the amount of water normally used to make a gravy?

Many thanks, the pie was supposed to be a surprise for my husband when he got home from work!
  • I often make my savoury pies (although usually chicken, as I don't eat much red meat) with gravy. Yum!
  • Yep I would :D

Thank you for your replies! I just wasn't sure, and I would normally ask my husband, but I want it to be a surprise as it's his favourite and he's been at work since 6 this morning!
  • Aww how lovely!! I'm sure he'll love it and be very grateful after such a long day :)

he loved the pie, I'm going to make it with gravy again, though next time going to use thicker gravy as it did go a little thin :-)
  • I use tinned condensed soup undiluted:cool:
