    Certain settings means it dials home to get data. There are features to check for related pages and for other things, all of which can be disabled in the options (and I think during the install) if you don't like the sound of them. It is therefore not officially classed as "badware", but some people worry about its privacy implications.

    Personally, I think it is superfluous and don't use it for that reason, but each to their own.....

    Only toolbar I use is roboform. I wouldn't recommend any other toolbars certainly not google who's primary objective is advertising

    Found this on net

    [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]6. Google's toolbar is spyware:
    With the advanced features enabled, Google's free toolbar for Explorer phones home with every page you surf, and yes, it reads your cookie too. Their privacy policy confesses this, but that's only because Alexa lost a class-action lawsuit when their toolbar did the same thing, and their privacy policy failed to explain this. Worse yet, Google's toolbar updates to new versions quietly, and without asking. This means that if you have the toolbar installed, Google essentially has complete access to your hard disk every time you connect to Google (which is many times a day). Most software vendors, and even Microsoft, ask if you'd like an updated version. But not Google. Any software that updates automatically presents a massive security risk.

    the toolbar does not contain any spyware the only info that is collected is info about page rank and this can be turned off, if you read the privacy policy this is clearly stated.

    It might not be 'spyware' but I personally don't like any software that 'phones home' whether it's innocent or not; I want my PC to be working on the tasks I set it not wasting resources on telling Google about my surfing habits.
    And as Poppycat posted it will automatically update without informing you.

    Factual Statement.

    In order to automatically update this display for each page you visit, the Toolbar sends information about the page you are viewing to the Google servers. Google, Inc. does not collect information that directly identifies you (e.g., your name, email address) and will not sell or provide personally identifiable information to any third parties. We strongly encourage you to read our privacy policy for more information on this topic.

    So not spyware.

    :)

    But it does collect your IP address, which CAN identify you , not directly, but very easily. And it stores everything you search for, hence the scandal about them handing over information to the chinese govt a couple of years ago....

    So we are meant to trust Google because they say so.

  • I also dislike the way that google trys to install its bar through other software. I find this the most dishonest thing about it tbh.
