Can i get Compensation from Royal Mail, For Bank Charges

I recently got a letter from Royal Mail, telling me there was a spate of letters being stolen from the local post office to me.
They then delivered about 20 letter's in the letter apologising. The problem is most were bills ( how unusual ) and having just moved into the property, it detailed dates and monies that were to be debited from my account, for which were brand new instructions.
I didn't have all the money available to pay for them, and the bank have charged me for paying some and rejecting others.

Seeing as the court case is ongoing, and i've already had a succesful claim against my other bank, would it not be better to go after Royal Mail for the charges money, seeing as how they have already admited liability and that it was an internal staff member who was the culprit.

Any Legal mind would be appreciated.

    I don't think you will get any joy with suing Royal Mail though if you complain you might get a goodwill payment. The problem as I see it, its the companies who sent you the bills are the ones who contracted with Royal Mail for the delivery service (i.e. they paid for the postage on the envelope) and not you.

    I also don't quite understand how you could set up new debits from your account and because you didn't receive the letters you weren't aware there was money to leave your account (so it might be best not to mention this).

    Good point about the contract with RM being with the sender. RM are very tight on their t&c's, and I imagine (though I haven't checked) that they would exclude third party liability.

    I assume that you asked the relevant companies to set up the direct debits? If so, they can take the money without knowing that you have actually received written confirmation. No help to you now, but you could have rang the companies to find out when the money was leaving your account. Also, if you have internet banking, many accounts allow you to check your direct debit payments.

    Compensation from RM is likely to be a book of twelve first class stamps. Anything more than that, without contractual liability, would be very difficult to get.
