Co-Op biodegradable baby wipes

Options
Hi!

I normally use biodegrable babywipes and buy them from the same site as I buy my littlest's Moltex nappies from. I normally pay £2.50 per pack of 72 wipes as I buy them in a box of 12 at a time.

However as money is extremely tight at the moment I thought I would have to put all of my green-principles to one side & just buy the cheapest I could find and set off to Co-Op to get a couple of packs.

When I got home I realised that not only had I paid just £1.80 for a pack of 72 Co-Op's own branded wipes, but they are according to the packaging "Biodegradable in an active landfill site within 6-12 months" :j

So not only am I saving loads of money my principles are not harmed either.

PS I know I should use reuseables, but I really don't have anywhere to dry them and we don't have a tumble dryer either and ok so maybe something as throwaway as baby wipes aren't, by their very nature, enviornmentally friendly, but hey at least biodegradable is better than not letting them sit in a landfill for decades!

I don't know if you can get biodegradable cotton wool, but at home cotton wool and water was all I ever used. I think you'd use fewer resources that way, because a wipe is wipe-sized (obviously), whereas you can pull off a larger or smaller piece of cotton wool according to need ...

  • Probably too much information, but my kids eat loads of fruit and veg and if I had to use cotton wool to wipe my 18-month old's pooey bum I would be going through half a roll or a whole bag each time she does one  (that's not an exageration, it really is that gross!!) also she would kick the water bowl over & then need a change of clothes which would lead to more washing etc, etc :o .

At least with wipes I only need maybe 3 or 4 at the very most (with wee nappies I only use one wipe).

Like I said I know wipes aren't exactly green, but at least biodegradables are better than the normal ones.

I have thought about using cotton wool, but for my explosive daughter it really doesn't seem to be an option. Thanks for the suggestion though it's appreciated :D

Well, rest assured they do EVENTUALLY get to the stage where you DON'T have to wipe their bums ANY MORE, although I clearly haven't trained DS3 very well because he does tend to be rather extravagant with the loo roll and he went through a VERY bad stage of blocking it at regular intervals! :rotfl:

BTW, Coop are very good place to shop for green and ethical, much of their own brand stuff is fairtrade etc, I know all their chocolate is.

  • Hi Savvy_Sue :D

I know hat you mean about them using rolls of paper at a time. When my eldest was about 4 she called me in after she had wiped her bottom to show me a trick she had learnt at nursery, needless to say the 'trick' was to shove loads of paper down the loo and then flush it "Look Mummy the water nearly gets over the edge!!".

I had to disappoint her by telling her this wasn't a trick, but a waste of paper and something which could land her in a whle heap of trouble if the water did 'get' over the edge

    Bless 'em hey :A

PS I was very excited when a new Co-Op opened up nearby which means that I now have an alternative to Tesco for some things (how sad am I eh!).
