Refund but cancelled card.

hey there, first post so be gentle.

I brought a toaster and kettle on my credit card 7 months ago from my local supermarket, i have since paid off and cancelled this card.

Now the kettle has stopped working and i am intending to take this back to the store for an exchange or refund. If they dont have an models to exchange and i am offered a refund i may have a problem, I know from previous experience that they only refund back on the card used when making the purchase. This presents a problem since obviously it doesnt exist anymore. Am i within my rights to demand a cash refund or credit back onto a different card?

thanks,

Jim

i don't think many places would give cash or refund a different card

they should be able to give you a credit note or gift vouchers though

in and explain the situation (thus proving you were the holder of the card) and speak to the manager if necessary they may be reasonable and refund you.

Generally refunds have to be to the original card – something to do with money laundering but, for example, the University of Southampton have this policy …

    http://www.soton.ac.uk/finance/income/payments/cards.html

    Policy on credit card refunds
    · Because of the potential problems with money laundering the University must, wherever possible, refund payments to the card originally used to make payments.
    · If a payment is made via the web then it will be necessary to ask the customer to confirm their card details, in order that the necessary checks can be carried out.
    · In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to refund to an alternative card (i.e. if the original card has been stolen or cancelled). In these instances it is essential that written confirmation is obtained from the customer detailing the payment card details, refund card details and the reason why the original card cannot be used.

… so it is possible for a refund to go to a different card.
