Hi ya i wonder if anyone could give me, well my partner some advice. He has been employed as a roofer by his current boss since leaving school, he has gained no qualifications except Confederation of Master roofers card. Obviously he is good at the job but thinks its time to move on, but is worried with nothing on paper he wont get anywhere. All of the college courses cover roofing in a week and obviously theres nothing like hands on experience which he had. Is there any other course providers or solutions.
Any help would be a help.
Thanks

When I was looking for a roofer to do my extension, I was not concerned with certificates. The quality of the job done by someone with experience and bona fide skill is what most people look for. I would imagine in the roofing trade, most companies want good experience in a variety of roof types. Perhaps he could think of going it alone?NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

Thanks for this, i knwo that it is basically down to experience but something on paper would be good. Self employed is alot of expense at the moment.

I always find that word of mouth is the best qualification that anybody can have in finding a new job. Surely your husband has worked on a job where other sub-contractors have worked and thought that he has done well! If so then tell him to give them a call and say just "sound out" any new openings that they might have.
Im sorry I cant help with your husband getting everything on paper but personally I have people who are recommended by there work, not by a piece of paper.0 -
A professional CV that lists his experience and roles to date (like whether he has had any supervisory or budgeting experience within his current firm, what kinds of materials/roofs/particularly complicated jobs he has worked on) - anything that adds to his appearence as an experienced professional. My family are all builders (very useful lol) and I agree that its word of mouth and reputation that count in terms of employment. However, if he is thinking of going to work for a larger firm that might offer a bit more of a training and career path in terms of responsibility and position, then references are really going to count. I'd make sure he leaves on good terms with his current boss and gets a "To whom it might concern"-style reference on headed paper that he can reuse in the future in case he loses touch later on.0
