Boots Free Eyetest - Catch?

Options
hi,

I have joined Boots Health Club and have received the mailings etc and in them it says I am entitled to a free eyetest (something I have been wanting for sometime but havent been able to afford). I was thinking about putting it on the Grabit board but then I thought there must be a catch somewhere... Any ideas what it could be and how to avoid it if I go and book an appt?

no catch just book and you dont even have to buy your glasses from them if you dont want to either. lots of people have taken up this offer its a benefit of joining the health club and loyaly card scheme

  • hi,

I went today and they didnt object to giving me the numbers of my prescription etc... On passing the displays I viewed some of the glasses; the lady tells me my lenses alone will be £115 plus glasses ranging from £60-£120+ Im truly appalled that they can charge that for lenses (never paid for them before always had a HC2 form) and then the frames themselves... in total a pair of glasses could cost around £200.

  • Opticians must give you your prescription numbers though if they suspect you're going to take them to buy specs off the net they may avoid giving you your facial measurements such as the width of your nose or the length of the arms of the glasses needed but online glasses shops usually have guides how to work this out yourself and if you have current glasses that fit well the numbers should be on the arm. Thanks to the glasses shopping guide on the main site here I got a half price eye test at Donald and Aitchison and bought glasses using the info from my test to buy glasses online - there are some great glasses online stores listed by Martin and I got a lovely, very good quality pair for less than £20 including express delivery from an American site. They look and work like designer style glasses. Thanks Martin! Optical Express currently are offering free eye tests I believe and I couldn't see any stipulation that you had to buy anything to get the free test.

First post - hope it's ok?!

No catch, other than giving them your details to become a member of their 'health club'.
Also worth bearing in mind (I know you've already had the test but for others reading this) if you work on a computer your employer should (legally speaking) pay for your eye test. Your employer may not know/ decide to mention this to you!

Look on the bright side, my last lenses cost £380. Including frames, I paid over £500 for my current glasses and that was 2 years ago.

Tht's the price that you had to pay then for having really bad eyes and needing varifocals of the highest quality. My eyes are so bad that the normal procedure is to find a lens blank first of the correct strength and then look for frames that use it with the centre point in the correct position.

You should find the measurements on one of the arms - just numbers. Online optical retailers will explain how to find and interpret them.

    hi,

Well I really can't find any numbers ...

I was searching through some old paper work and came across a script dated October prescribing glasses ... I must have beenn asleep because I cant recall it ... Anyway some of the numbers are different ... can anyone explain how this could be? surely my eyes cant have got worse in a few months?!?!the two tests were done by different opticians but surely they should be the same!! And which do I go with ...

  • Hey

Some opticians work in -cyl and some work in +cyl.

This will make your prescriptions look very different if 1 optom works in +cyl and the other in -cyl.

    E.g
if your Prescription was sph -0.50 cyl +1.50 @ 180 (I know this looks like gobbldy gook) in -cyl it would look like sph +1.00 cyl-1.50 @ 90.

They look completely different but mean the exact same.

    Hope that helps.
