cleaning the cooker top

Our cooker top has some burned on stuff that we can never shift no matter how hard we scrub, or how clean everywhere else is. There are also some isolated spots of really stubborn grease that we can't shift. I have tried stardrops, fairy, jif, other cleaners but nothing works. The spatter guard to the right of the cooker is also really greasy and I would love to give it a proper clean oldstyle .... any tips onhow to shift the tough grease and burned on bits? The cooker is gas and there is burned bits round the gas ring, and it is white, so cannot scrape at it too hard or it scratches the surface.

Thanks in advance

I use a toothbrush and value washing powder. Works well around the gas rings.

    biological or non-bio powder? That's something I haven't tried yet, thanks :)

You could try boiling water on the greasy bits of the cooker top leave to soak then scrub. Another thing I've been using is a paste of bicarb and washing up liquid - needs elbow grease, but seems to work really well on the cooker top (Kim and Aggie used this mixture for the glass of an oven door). If you can get hold of a plastic scraper then this will shift burnt on bits and shouldn't scratch the surface.

    Hope this helps.

When I had a gas cooker I removed those stubborn black bits with Brillo pads.

I had that problem a while back and I dissolved some soda crystals in hot water and dabbed that all over, leaving a little liquid but not too much, let it soak a little and surprisingly most if not all of it came off. I've also used non bio washing powder in my plastic sink to get rid of marks and that worked pretty well too, so should work on the cooker top.

    Hi Mrsspendalot,

This older thread might give you some ideas too:

    how to clean the hob

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep all the suggestions together.

I just did mine at the weekend, and it came up a treat. I made a thick solution of bicarb and water and painted it on with a pastry brush, left for a couple of hours and then it pretty much wiped off. Any stubborn stains came off with a light scrubbing with the bicarb.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Have you tried liquid soda crystals? I bought some from our local 99p shop and I tried it on my shower door to start with. I'm not kidding when I say it disolved the soap scum. I've never seen anything work like that - and I love my Stardrops too. Nothing worked like the liquid soda crystals. This stuff makes cleaning grease so easy. Washing down kitchen cabinets, cleaning the inside of the cooker door, cleaing tiles, washing windows. I have got my mum, sister, mother-in-law and my aunt, all hooked lol. There's no phosphates or bleach and it has virtually no smell. I want this site to do for the liquid soda crystals to do what it did for Stardrops. ;)
It's also great for cleaning the grease on a grill pan.
I get excited at the thought of people trying it and seeing how good it is. I'm sad lol
