Just a question

O.k i am have a small debt with interum justice, to the sum of £50, (i know doesnt sound alot of money but to me its a fortune), i work very hard and after bills i only have around £10 a month spare for debts, now this company keep phoning me asking for this debt to be paid, but they refuse to let me pay this debt in installments, they wont give me a phone number where i can reach them or even send a letter with there details on. when ever they call they just say they are taking the debt further.

Any advice on what can be done, what can i say to them to let me pay this debt up in installments

    Hi Makester,

It’s not a case of what they would like it’s what you can afford! The first thing you need to do is put together a Financial Statement (SOA) the amount you have left with once you have paid you priorities i.e. mortgage, utilities, food etc is the amount to offer. If it turns out you can only afford to pay £10 and they say they want it all, you keep paying the £10 regardless and they will knock it off the balance.

Do you have more that one debt? If so there are a number of ways that you may choose to deal with your current situation. As a general rule they all need to include a financial statement as the foundation from which to begin. Whist we cannot advise you fully on your situation via this forum we do have a free online advice facility called Debt Remedy where you can complete a financial statement and be provided with advice on the best way to deal with your situation. This link will take you directly to Debt Remedy

Once you have put together your financial statement you could post it up here and people will be along to help you with some moneysaving tips.

  • I have already had a Financial Statment Drawn up witht he local citizens advice centre, £10.29 is what i have left after all other debts, this is the reason for the need for the letter from them, i have explainined all this to them, i have the feeling i will just have to wait till they do take the matter further and go plead my case at court. i will probibly get a fairer deal.

    Hi Makster,

Stick to your guns!! Just give them the £10.29 a month. If they have stopped the interest and charges you will have them cleared off in 5 months and then you won’t have to deal with them anymore. The best way of making the payments is either through standing order of payment book so you have control at all times how much they get.

Try and keep all contact through letters then you don’t have to speak to them directly. This is going to reduce the stress for you.
