"Debt" - With or without mortgage?

Hey,

Been reading these forums for a while, but I was just wandering, when people say "I'm £x in debt", does that debt include mortgage or not? Is a mortgage seen as a necessity rather than a debt?

Thanks,

  • I think most people don't include it in their debt but there are some that do.

I don't otherwise I would have to say that I am 84000 pounds in debt instead of 5300.

if you read people's threads it is mostly clear if they include it or not.

I think it's just because it's something most people have - if you don't have a mortgage then you'd have rent payments and you wouldn't count that as a debt.

Plus there's a whole separate board for paying off your mortgage :)
