sorry to drag this old thread up again but can anyone tell me the best printer for printing good photos and with reasonable priced ink cartridges, looking to spend between £50 and £80

Try for one which uses 6 (or more) cartridges if photos are the main purpose for buying a printer

Yes I need to buy a printer but dont know which one to get....as they all seem as bad as each other for cartridges......the cheapest printer I can get away with the better....just black and white...dont intend printing colour anyway....? :D I have Cartridge World practically on my doorstep so I will certainly be refilling.....
:D Advice freely given is rarely taken except on MSE:cool: Dont shoot the messenger:)

I've had a Kodak for about 18 months and find it goes through ink like water. I've paid more to replace the inks for that than I ever had to for my Cannon. I can't wait to get rid of it!

My advice to you would be buy a brother or epson machine, then get compatible cartridges for them (compats are brand new / not refilled)

If you get a brother or epson (or some canon) printer then your cartridge choices will be
1)Originals - 99.9% reliable, very good quality, but the most expensive option
2)Compatibles - much cheaper and typically 95% reliable - these are brand new and are just like copied originals. With epson if your printer is under warranty and you take it in for repair then you will need to put originals back in it when you take it in. For this reason I would suggest holding onto the original set thats supplied with the printer when you first get it.

If you get a HP or lexmark (or some other canon) printer then your cartridge choices will be:
1)Refill your own - cheapest choice but low sucess rate and often messy
2)Refilled/Remanufactured - cheaper than originals but lots of them dont print properly so be prepared to return to shop with your guarantee. Places like cartridgeworld that will refill while you wait are only a fraction cheaper for refills than for buying originals anyway.
3)Originals - 99.9% reliable, very good quality, but the most expensive option: if you go for this route then amazon marketplace is probably one of the cheapest places to buy.

Tip: if you buy any machine from pcworld/dixons/currys then make sure the inks are widely available first - they are well known for selling discounted printers and then the inks are ONLY available from their own stores, which they then charge a ridiculously high amount for.

I've got an ink cartridge shop. If you want advice re any specific machine or cartridges then please pm me.

At Dabs4work.com, the cartridges for the new Epson Stylus D120 printer (£54.43 + VAT) are £6.71 + VAT for black (2 required) and £6.72 + VAT for cyan, magenta or yellow. A pack of all 5 is £16.72 +VAT.
£16.72+vat for 5 ??? i think youll find that theyve changed their name to bt business direct.... and changed their price to £26+vat for 4 ! lol

As a guide, I charge £25 (inc vat and del) for TEN cartridges for the d120. Dont always expect the big chains to be the cheapest, cos theyre not!

In general the worst printers to get are Lexmark's if you are wanting to buy them cheap, due to the fact that Lexmark release them out when there is a new printer only to then do a deal with PC World and Currys only in connection with cheap printers and expensive inks, so the customer thinks they are getting a bargain with the printer only to find out that in a few months the inks are uber expensive, in these cases its worth buying a new printer. The only decent lexmark cartridges that have come out in a compatible format are the 100 105 and 108 inks otherwise you are struggling with the originals. Would recommend to find a printer with either Canon BCI 3's or Epson T0711's or T0891's generally cheap inks yet provide decent quality prints sometimes even with photo printing on the compatibles. Its a case of experimenting until you are happy :-)
    Every Little helps :rotfl:

The Epson SX415 is worth an look IMO, on offer at £39:99 in Argos until 21/01/2011

    http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002451&langId=-1&searchTerms=SX415#pdpProductReviews

Cartridges are approx £4:14 / £4:23 a set from these

    http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/cartridge_finder.php?nav=8

It uses 4 cartridges which will be fine for documents and if you need to print a photo, just adjust the settings and it will do a good job. That and you get a more than reasonable scanning option (1200 x 2400dpi optical resolution), with a copy facility

Have two of them and am impressed

Good tip in post 37 about keeping the set which are included and running them with compatibles from the off.
