Non-refund of TV Licence

Can anyone give advice.
My TV licence is in my ex-husbands name, although the DD has always come from my bank account. I wrote twice to TV Licencing to ask them to change the licence to my name - which they ignored.
I have had to get a new licence in my name and they will not refund the credit on the old licence as it is in his name although it was I that paid it.
How many other people have been caught out with this as I had forgotten completely that for the first 6 months of a DD to TV licencing you pay double.
This is not at all fair
and their call centre people seem only to able to read from scripts which say "it's his licence - you need his permission to get the credit back"
I don't even know where the SOB is nor do I want to, I just want my money.
Any useful suggestions please

I thought the license was for the address?
If you are living at the address the license is for just let it run out before you buy a new one.
If you are paying by DD cancel it. When the current license runs out they will send you a reminder. It will be in your EX's name, so ring them up and get them to send one in your name. If they won't, send it back marked not known at this address and they will send one to "the occupier" which you can get put into your name.
I've moved house twice in the last few months, both times I told them I was moving and got the license changed to the new address. And both times a reminder was sent to "The Occupier" before I'd actually moved out.0 -

Because the licence was in his name, although I live at the licence address. The licence is for the person, not the address. Also I was told that if I did not get a licence in my name, I could then be fined:mad: if caught by the detector van0

Do you have the licence? If so, according to their site, you can change the name online - also, the advice there seems to be that the licence , as others have said, is for the address, whoever's name it is in (unless it is a student hall of residence, or unless he has transferred the licence to his new address!) see https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/details/cod_step1.jsp I've just tried it, and one of the name change options on there is divorce/separation. hope this is helpful0 -

So who told them he wasn't living in the house any more?0 -
I did as I didn't want anything further to do with him, but situation is now resolved with a very helpful tv licence lady.
The old licence stays until May (I do not pay the last 6 months) and then get it changed to my name. The Licence is the person and not the address. As he has not written to the Licence people therefore it covers my address. They have no record of any change from him so presume that he has forgotten he took it out in the first place.
I could understand they might think that he would update his records and so it would be transferred to his new address and therefore I would not be covered.
I also changed it on the website - thanks for that link stpandp and also pointed out that, that option was never even suggested by their helpdesk.
thanks to all, now a calmer bunny0 -
