When do I send the invitations?

Hi,
I'm getting married in August and I have just received the invites from the lady who made them. When should I send them out? I have a menu to go in with the invite so the guests can choose their meal, and really the sooner I have these numbers the better - I can let the caterers know and, more importantly - find out the cost! There are only around 20 people to cater for but there's so much other stuff to pay for that I like to know what I need to spend.
Any advice gratefully received!

Hi,
From what I've read previously here on MSE I believe you should send them out 6 weeks before (minimum) and ideally 12 weeks before.
I've also read that the weddingpath website (www.weddingpath.co.uk) allows your guests to RSVP online (free service) - saving them the trouble from posting replies to you. I've not tried it out yet (I'm not getting married until summer next year) but it sounds like a great idea! They have various other services which are also free until the date of your wedding (charges apply thereafer).

We had to let our caterers know a month beforehand numbers at our reception (and to know how many tables and chairs we needed!). I was so desperate to know who was coming that our invitations went out 9 weeks before the day.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0

mirror image - u could always send out "save the date" cards/fridge magnets to prevent you having to send them out 4 months in advance. This way people know when they are and you can send the invites out closer to the time with menus etc0

We are getting married next year in may.
We are looking at sending them out about july this year. I dont like the save the date cards. So we are just sending out the invited in plenty of time for everyone.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
I have been invited to a wedding in July 2008...... I received the invitation in the post back in August 2007! So I guess you can send them out whenever you want.0

I am getting married in July and I sent the 'save the date' magnets out yesterday. I won't be sending the invitations out until April but wanted to let people know as its at the start of the school summer holidays.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

Hi PinkPig!!
I think 6-12 weeks befroe is the norm, often depending on when you venue confirmation on the numbers for eating etc...
I am getting married in September and am sending my invites out Mid Fab, with a RSVP date by end of April... sending them early as I have a limited number of people able to come to the ceremony and sit down meal... if i get an 'no's' then it gives me enough time to ask others who were only coming to the evening do to pop along to the ceremony!0
