The grill elements probably come on when you turn on the oven to pre-heat it to the set temperature.

Ah yes that would make sense actually. I did put the yorkshires in before the oven had heated up so that would be why it grilled them.

    Thank you!
  • So in summary, my oven isn't broken and I AM stupid good to know :rotfl:

So in future wait for oven to heat up properly before putting stuff in and it wont get grilled.

Thank you very much everyone

Just remembered..................my Mums old oven used to have a grill that could be either half on or full on..............have I explained that ok ? If not - well, it meant you could either just use thr right hand side of it or all of it depending on how much stuff was being grilled.
Might not apply to your over but was just a thought that came into that empty space laughlingly known as myt brain................lol

    Goodluck

Dont beat yourself up about it,we had a new oven just before xmas and it came with an instruction booklet.......which was completely unintelligible,it just kept referring to oven 1 or 2 and there were no diagrams to explain what knobs did what. I spent ages standing in front of it with a bemused expression on my face. I am just about getting the hang of it.

Sparklewing....I think it has been established that your oven is not broken...no evidence yet found of your stupidity....go easy on yourself child....sounds to me as if the thermostat is a little wonky on that oven...try having the temperature a little lower to stop things burning...would agree that the small squiggly thing is what turns on half your grill, but not sure that your grill should go red when oven is heating.

    Good cooking,
