Dusty House

  • Well at least it looks as if I am not on my own with the dust problem. I'll try the microfibre clothes and see if that helps. I'm using a Dyson but used to have a Kirby which although expensive did a really good job. It died after 10 years which I suppose wasn't bad but I'd need to rob a bank to buy a new one.

How often do you clean/change the filter?

I've got a washable filter and now clean it every week - empty the cylinder at the same time. Found that this makes a huge difference.

I have a constant dust problem too, with 4 adults and 2 cats living here, and a not-very-housewifey-woman (me) in charge of the cleaning!

Dust bunnies chase me all the time.

Hoovering is a chore especially up and down the stairs. Does anyone know if there is a good quality hand-held vacuum cleaner, worth buying? I had one that a friend had given me but it was useless! Our vacuum cleaner is a Dyson and when it works it works well but it is very temperamental, so I am thinking that for short spells of dusting the stairs I could use a good hand held one!

Also, is there any environmentally friendly liquid (other than water obviously) that I could use when dusting wooden furniture and pictures/tv/computer screen) to repel dust?

    Thank you!

    Caterina

I got a Dyson hand held for xmas. I love it and it is great for the stairs! If you buy it direct from Dyson, you still pay the same price, but they also gave me a free pack of attachments.

If you live near a main road as someone else here pointed out it will be worse.

Unfortunately to, hard floors allow the dust to move around unlike carpet where it settles.

My tips for less dusting are as follows. Sweep the front path and back path regularly this cuts down dirt being trod in.

I vacuum my house twice a week (very important) this keeps dusting to a minimum. I only need to do mine about every 3 weeks.

I have a Dyson which I find excellent. I also have a Black & Decker Dustbuster 9.6 volt. (do not buy less power as they are no good), this is very good for a quick whizz round to pick up bits if someone is going to pop in unexpectedly.

I'm afraid I don't hold with the idea of cleaning up if someone is popping in unexpectedly. Obviously in an ideal world my house would always be pristine, but it isn't and I make no apologies for that. I NEVER apolgise for the 'state of the place' when ANYONE comes to the house. As far as I'm aware, noone has stayed away because the house looks less than perfect.

It's our house and we LIVE here, not exist!

Caterina, i rarely vaccuum the stairs because i find it difficult to handle the machine as well as clean the stairs and the pipe on my previous vaccuum stretched out of recognition within months but i get a large wet microfibre cloth once a week and go over the stairs. The dust and hairs roll into a bit of a ball and a lot of them cling to the cloth. I wash the cloth out when i have got half way down the stairs and do the rest of the stairs.

The time it takes to get our little cylinder out I've done the stairs with a dustpan and brush.
As for cleaning because someones about to visit, well if they call on me, it's me they've come to see, not the house. It's lived in, therefore of course it gets dusty and dirty...........there's four of us plus three cats and its out home. Long as we're comfortable with it then that should be ok.

  • I don't know if this is the right place to post this so feel free to move it if necessary.
I dust my house almost everyday and the next day there's a thick layer of dust again. Other peoples houses don't seem to be as dusty as mine. It seems to have got worse since we removed all carpets and now have only wooden or tiled floors. The reason for removing the carpets was because I have an allergy to dust.
I have tried wet wipping surfaces but it makes no difference. Anybody any ideas on how to keep the dust at bay.
Did you ever find a solution? My house is very dusty too - much more than anywhere else I've ever lived - and I've developed a dust allergy since moving here. I don't have the time (or the will!) to dust every little nook and cranny all the time, but the excessive dust is the bane of my life. There must be a reason why some houses are very dusty and there must be a solution, other than the rather expensive one of moving house!

I find that our flat isn't as dusty as our last house, I do wonder if that is because the front door opens onto a corridor, rather than the outside.

We don't have any carpet in our flat, generally we sweep the bathroom and living area with a rubber brush most days, sometimes we will just run the hoover over it instead if we are feeling lazy. We then steam the floor three times a week, the bedrooms get done once a week as they aren't used as much so don't get as dusty/covered in crumbs and all sorts.

Where surfaces are concerned we wet dust the tv stand fully everyday, obviously the kitchen tops get cleaned after each use so they never accumulate dust, but everywhere is okay with being dusted twice a week. The only thing that grosses me out is the extractor fan in the bathroom, I hoover it once a week and every week it is visibly dusty, I'm guessing that it gets damp and so the dust sticks to it in layers, but it can be quite grim.

It is a little dustier in the spring/summer but that is because the have the patio doors to the garden open quite a lot.
