Refused new loan from co-op bank with same monthly repayments
Update: Went to see the Halifax, got rejected - they said my credit score was too low. So came home, spent £15 getting it and it's 456/500 and says it's higher than the average person and most creditors would give me credit... The only category its got a warning by is 'electoral register' as i have only lived here for 1yr 7 months and most creditors like at least 3 or 4 years, nothing I can do about that so will just have to plod on paying extortionate credit card interest!
Hi,
I took out a loan 18 months ago for £6,000 with the Co-op, in order to leave my ex-boyfriend and set up a home on my own, I pay £160 over 42 months by monthly standing order and have never missed a payment.
In November I had a dentists bill of nearly £2500 which I had to put on my credit card (it wasn't cosmetic I was in agony so it had to be done!) so along with my existing credit card balance of around £1000 which was manageable I now found I was owing nearly £4,000 which is going to take forever to pay off as the interest is extortionate.
I approached the Co-op and asked for a loan of £8,000 over 60 months to settle my existing loan and consolidate my credit card debts, but they have said as a responsible lender they feel i would be overstretching myself and refused my application. I pointed out as I alreayd owe the money i am more 'overstretched; paying the loan and the cards and that over 60 months the repayments on £8,000 are exactly the same as what I am comfortably managing to pay now but i just got a 'the computer says no' reply and that was that.
My own bank can't offer me a loan even if they wanted to as my account is in Jersey and I no longer live there and they can't loan 'offshore'
I have got an appointment booked on Friday evening to see someone at the Halifax bank with regards to getting a loan from them (I am also going to ask for a bank account with them too in the hope it will help my application?) But am I wasting my time do you think and are they all going to say no? or are the co-op just being over cautious int he current climate of credit problems? (One of my credit cards is with the Halifax)
I would be grateful for any tips or suggestions
Thanks very much
