How to clean handles?

I'm re-decorataing my kitchen (can't afford a new one and like the old layout anyhow).
I priced up some new kitchen cupboard handles and at only £2.99 each they seemed a bargain, untill I realised I need 28!!!!!!!!!!!!
My old ones are looking better by the minute ;)
They really need a good clean, so can anyone advise me on the best way to do them please.
Usually I just leave everything in hot soapy water, but don't know if they are suitable to be doing this with.
I think they are brushed steel?? They have that dull silver that I'm sure is called brushed steel, but am unsure if that's what they are actually made of.
I'm afraid to damage them in case I have to fork out for the new ones.
They no longer sell them either.
Other than dunk one in the hot soapy, has anyone any other ideas please?
While up I've normally just wiped them with a damp cloth and they seem ok for that.
Thanks in advance
LL

  • Hi Lillie :hello:

A quick google of how to clean brushed steel recommends soapy water to clean, followed by a polish with baby oil.

I did mine yesterday with surgical spirit - and it's got all the marks off. They look good as new - and there are absolutely no bacteria on them. (Kitchen smells a bit like an operating theatre, but that will wear off!)

I know I keep going on about Barkeepers Friend but I am sure this will clean them. Although do a little test first on a small area.

    Hi LilacLillie,

Apparently you can buy it in most supermarkets. There's a thread about it here:

There is a Better Cleaner Than Stardrops

  • Hi Lilaclillie. A slight long shot, but you could ask on Freecycle. I've got 18 sitting in my garage from when I had my kitchen put in, but they weren't to my taste (I got some fab cheap ones from IKEA instead). I'll get round to gining them away one of these days.. :)
