I am interested in joining a sewing group, possibly quilting or embroidery and am wondering if anyone knows of any in Northampton and what is expected of me as a new member. Also if anyone has any idea of the expected cost involved eg fees and equipment thanks,
I am needing to find a new hobby and I love sewing. I would be thankful of any advice
D any other MSErs belong to any such groups and are they worth joining?

I'm not in your area and never been a member of a sewing group, so sorry I cant be much help, but it might be worth you trying your local library, they would know of any groups locally. Good luck in finding something.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I belong to the Essex and Suffolk Quilters. It costs us £22 per year and £2.50 for each monthly meeting. Membership also gives us a discount at one of our local sewing shops. I have been going for just about a year. Some meetings are demonstrations and I have learnt lots of new techniques - not just quilting but other sewing crafts as well. Some meetings are talks from an expert. At most meetings there is a "show and tell" where member show any sewing they have completed. I haven't yet been brave enough to take anything in. Although at our next meeting we have all been asked to make a cushion for our local children's hospice. So will have to put my sewing skills on display for that although we are assured that basic is acceptable.
The age range is varied as are the skill levels but everyone is very friendly and willing to help you if you are stuck on something. If you find a group go along - I didn't officially join untill I was sure it was someting I wanted to do.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060 -
Have you tried your local Adult Education? Also if their is a fabric/craft shop near you and you don't see anything advertised in there, ask if you could put a small notice up asking if anyone knows of one .... or try & start one yourself.0

For a while I belonged to a quilting group attached to a local quilting and fabric shop. If you have one of those nearby I'm sure they will run classes there. I enjoyed the company, nothing is expected of you apart from enthusiasm but I discovered that quilting is not really for me, I prefer to dressmake.
Try your local library, Yellow Pages etc for quilting shops locally.

there's a section in the index about local groups that meet up. I found one near enough to me, but haven't been yet... too many other things to do."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Hi she grinch,
Many quilting groups in my area meet up in the local community centres. Maybe you could google your local authority page and look up the community centres in your area as sometimes, they will list what activities and details take place in the various community centres on a regular basis. HTH.
Edited, just though of something else. The Quilters Guild have areas and sometimes put details of what groups are in what areas. try googling the quilters guild and you should get to see what is in your area.Proud to have dealt with my debts. Nerd number 288:j Debt free date Dec 07 :EasterBun
