How do I pay tax on non-PAYE 2nd job?

Hi there,
I am looking into doing a bit of extra work in addition to my full time job. Some of the work I have looked into the companies state that they do not deduct the tax on a PAYE basis, and I would be responsible for sorting my own tax out. I have no idea how to go about this but of course do not want to get into trouble for not paying tax. Would I need to get one of these tax returns and if so are they a nightmare to fill in?
Any advice or comments gratefully received,
Many thanks, Sarah.

Where I work some people work there as a second job and they pay is just taxed on the BR code basic rate 22%. That's it nothing else for them to do unless of course they're earnings take them into the 40% band.
In your case I guess you'd need to phone your local tax office and they could advise, but probably you'd need to fill in a tax return. These forms look worse than they are especially if you only have information from 2 jobs to fill in, you'll probably find quite a lot can be left blank.0 -
another option the tax office have is to reduce the tax code on the main earnings by the amount you anticipate to earn on the second job.
It really depends on how much the income is going to be on the second job and how much you earn on the first one. So you may end up with either of the ways mentioned. Only way to find out is let the tax office know.
The tax office staff are usually very helpful and very friendly and you shouldnt let the old inaccurate image of them put you off contacting them.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
Thanks for the advice, I shall contact the tax office.
