I go to the supermarket at the beginning of the week, so try and plan meals for the start of the week that use things that go off easily, such as fish, chicken, tender veg like spinach etc. Towards the end of the week I will plan meals that are from stock cupboard or freezer items, eg tonight we are having pasta with tomato sauce. I find that if we end up going out, its normally towards the end of the week, so we don't actually waste any fresh food. Also, it helps that as the more tired I get during the week, the less actual cooking I need to do.

I would say that we stick to about 90% of our planned meals. The only thing I don't plan is food for the weekend, as we are normally in and out, and only resort to take away about once a month, which isn't THAT bad.

go for chopped salads based on carrots, couple of types of cabbage and celery. The ingredients have more stying power, it's less fiddly to eat and you can use more intersting dressings.

I have read the whole thread before realising it was 9 years old! I can't imagine the OP is still looking for a way to use up her salad, but everything else in here is still totally valid :)
