I want to buy my mum a cordless telephone that will work in a power cut but all the ones I have senn so far need electricity to the base station to work. Is it possible to buy one that switches to DC power in the event of a power cut?

I don't think there is to be honest.
I think that's when a mobile phone comes in to play, or a standard home phone that doesn' require electricity.0 -

I've never heard of such a thing. The usual recommendation is to have a corded phone attached to the same telephone line using a T-adaptor for use in power cuts.
I guess you could invest in a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), this sort of thing:

My own cordless phone base unit only consumes 1.9W (standby), 6.8W (maximum), so I imagine a cheap UPS would probably be sufficient.Stompa0
