I want to be debt free. Desperately.

Just a quick question about my Halifax card.

I took the card out a while back and it has a limit of £700. I stopped paying it due to circumstances beyond my control and now the balance is about £1400. I want to pay it off but now the monthly payments ar massive to even make a dent in the balance.

When I call Halifax they are just very snooty and not much help (rightly so I suppose as it is my fault  ) but all I want to do it try to clear it.

I'm not a home owner and cannot get credit elsewhere - so cannot switch the balance I don't think.

I was thinking of writing to Halifax and asking them if they could freeze the interest until I get back under my limit, as I recently became unemployed. I am however planning to be self-employed very soon, so income will be coming soon hopefully. I am surviving on my wonderful's partner's help for household stuff (rent etc).

Anyone have any advice about this? I realise it's a relatively small balance but I don't have any friends or family that could lend me the money unfortunately!

Thanks for reading.

    Hiya!

You could ask them to freeze the interest, although you might find they just refuse if they don't seem to be being very helpful in any other way.

If you do want to try and find a way to tackle the debt, how about posting your SOA (see Help for First Time Posters ), and we can see if we can suggest any ways to cut back and make savings?

  • Do you have any payment protection cover on the credit card? If you're unemployed, then be sure and make a claim on it as that's what it's meant to be there for.

Also, make sure you claim what you're entitled to in terms of benefits. I made the mistake of putting off 'signing on' and as a result, I didn't get PPI from day one of my employment, only from the date I actually received my first JSA payment.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
