but....according to Wiki "Titanium-doped sapphire (Ti:sapphire) produces a highly tunable infrared laser, commonly used for spectroscopy as well as the most common ultrashort pulse laser."

It sounds as if rubies may have been used first but sapphires are more commonly used now.

I have just found this:

"Ruby lasers have declined in use with the discovery of better lasing media."
