Stopping Self Assessment

I've not been self-employed for several years. Will the Inland Revenue ever stop requiring me to submit a self-assessment form or am I stuck with it for life...?
I assumed that after 5 or 6 years they would have got the message that I don't owe them anything! Do I need to contact them to request that I be taken off Self Assessment?

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...

Yes - if they haven't got the message from 'zero' Returns? (I'm assuming they're not keeping you on because of untaxed Interest etc?)
Be helpful if you can give them a PAYE reference if you're employed? But that shouldn't stop them removing you from SA .. as they ceased keeping people on it just for fun ... several years ago.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
If you don't fulfill the criteria for completing a tax return then a possible reason for them continuing to be sent to you is a delay submitting the tax returns until close to the 31 January deadline. By then it is too late to stop the print run of the next years tax return and once that is issued it has to be completed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Ha ha, that'll be me then! Though I excelled myself this year and did it on the 20th.

Update: Before I had got round to phoning the IR, I got a letter yesterday saying that they're satisfied that it's no longer necessary for me to do self-assessment. Yippee! :jIf I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...0

From experience, ring HMRC and clarify which year they are stopping you from. It may be 07/08 and therefore you may need to submit a form in April.
A lot of people misread these letters (dont phone this week though its mad busy)0 -

For SA, surely not? The 'you no longer need to submit returns' letter is generally both welcome and triggered by the processing of the last Return. And it's normally fairly clear that is the last one expected.
You got your PAYE hat on?;)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I, personally, know its fairly clear but i also know the amount of queries we get on a daily basis (esp at this time of year) about these letters where they have been read incorrectly!0
