Anyone know how to get mildew off leather shoes? OH has a pair of new shoes which got pushed to the back of the wardrobe an when he got them out, one of the shoes has mildew all around the front. They are really nice, light(ish) brown shoes that were quite expensive. I did do a search but could only find threads on mildew in bathrooms.

this happens to some of my leather boots whilst in the porch :o

If you can get hold of some saddle soap (from any equestrian store), it just lathers up like regular soap and you just use a sponge and give the shoes a good rub and you'll see the mildew come off (make sure the water is quite warm). After they've dried, you can just apply some leather care.

Well - not got to the 3 month mark yet on my little experiment on dealing with mould on my footwear.

However - see another question has come up on this - so report-back so far - theres no sign to date of the mould having come back - looks like its done the trick.

In fact - I discovered a few old clothes in a secondary wardrobe had also developed mould - so plonked them in the washing machine and washed them and then rinsed them through with some tea tree oil in the rinse water. That also seems to have worked.

I've just got some shoes out of the wardrobe and they've gone mouldy! Looked a bit like dust - all fibres but with green spots on fibres - so think it must be a type of mould.
They've only been in there a few months, they were stored under stairs before. It was mostly just on top of the leather and most has wiped off easily but I want to give them a good clean now and don't know what to use. (they're a slip on shoe with leather tops and fabric edges)

I'm tempted to put them in the washer but don't want to dissolve the glue or spread whatever it is to my washing!

Anybody else had this or any ideas on what to clean them with - don't really want to throw them. And it's a bit wet outside to air them

    Hi Kate,

There's an earlier thread with some ideas that may help so I've added your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

    Thanks, I never noticed it

I've got some tea tree so I'll give it a go - and might see if I can get some saddle soap too
