Just had strange phone call - should I worry?
I just got a phone call from someone from some sort of ‘verification department’, asking for someone who I had never heard of. When I said they did not live here, she told me the number she had phoned, and it was mine. Then she asked what county I live in, and that was correct too (she spoke the name of the county, I didn’t). Then she said my application for a loan has been approved. I told her that I have not applied for a loan. She apologised and we left it there. She was in no particular hurry to hang up, it was just like a normal conversation.
Should I be worried? I could get my credit report couldn’t I. I wish I'd quizzed her more now.
Thanks,
wb.

Did you give her your name? How come she asked for someone else, then told YOU your application had been approved?
I'd get my report and keep getting it on a regular basis. Anything dodgy, jump on it like a ton of bricks. It's good you've got a record of this conversation, I'd write it down somewhere else too.0 -
No, I never gave my name and she never asked for it either. She was foreign (Indian?), her English wasn't great and I think she was working from a script so just carried on, not knowing what else to do.
I will apply for my credit report today, like you say it is better to be in a position to deal with anything that is out of place.0 -
Hi WB,
There is an Indian based call centre that I know of that makes this type of call. They are called Shakespeare Finance and they have a contact no. in the UK of 0207 097 2690. Give them a call and explain what has happened and, if you cannot remember the name of the person who they asked for, give them your postcode and first line of address. If it was them who called you they will be able to find your details from this. Then ask them to remove you from their database. If you want to chase it further, you can ask them to tell you where they got your details from and trace it back (this can be a very long process).
Just to put your mind at rest, this sort of company only act as brokers and therefore do not make any credit checks against your credit file. Credit checks will only be carried out by the lender once you have made an application for a loan.0 -

Sounds like a scam to me. I get loads of junk mail saying my loan application has been approved. Most of them quote numbers in US $.0
