  • Hi bobsie1. Did you have any joy getting this service for free??

I'm an existing Barclaycard Card customer and I was charged £69.99 for this service which was arranged before I found all this information about it being free. Thanks for posting this information! I was already annoyed that I was pressured into accepting the service (even though I was already preparing to jump on the post when it arrived so I could cancel it!). But to find out it should have been free was even more of an annoyance!

Decided to ask Barclaycard about it but they were no help so I called the policy providers and cancelled the policy (no. is same as in the letter you received back from Barclaycard 0844 811 9141). They told me my transaction had already gone through but that they have authorised a refund as it is within 14 days.

I'm annoyed by this because why did Barclaycard sell this to me in the first place if it's meant to be free for existing customers. Also, their website says it £59.99!! So I was charged an extra £10 on top too!

I want to ask Barclaycard about this but no-one in customer services can help me - they pass me on to the policy providers and they can't advise me either - they just act on Barclaycard's instructions and advise I need to take it up with them!

I just wondered if you'd managed to get this service free so I can add this to my army of information!?

    Cheers!

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I did manage to get the ID policy for free. As you said, you wasnt told about it being free as they only wanted to charge you, like they wanted to do to me, but I asked them this because of the email that I received from Barclaycard direct.

I am waiting for the policy to be sent, they said within 14 days, so watch this space.

Coincidentally, I applied for, and was accepted for Capital One credit card. I have no intention of using the card, just merely use the services provided by them for ID Fraud.
When my policy arrives with Barclaycard, would it be ok to send you a private message to let you know

  • Hi just phoned b'card OR rather the phone number above, (which is not b'card but the id prot' company) they said that the free cover is for 30 days only plus the 14 day cooling off period = 44 days free

After that it is £59 a year or £4.49 a month or there abouts.

Has anyone got free cver for longer, ie a year???

    Cheers steve

    Hi again

Phoned them back and they said that they could not give the free cover from their company

Apparantly you can apply via the barclaycard website.

Hi Steve, thanks for posting a reply.

I have just emailed Barclaycard Customer Services again and asked them for definitive information as to whether this protection is free or not. I will await their reply and post their reply again.

As far as I am aware, the service is free and wasnt told of any costs when i first contacted them, as i did inform a member of Barclaycard Cust Serv that I did receive an email from them so there should be no confusion, well, i hope not. Watch this space and when i get a reply, i will let you know

says on their website its £59.99

but as Martin says...you dont need it.

    Q. Do I need ID fraud insurance?
No no no no NO! An entire industry has built up selling us the fear of ID fraud and then trying to sell us insurance against it! In some ways these companies are almost, although not quite, as bad as the fraudsters themselves. Most non-high net worth individuals don’t need to pay for these expensive insurance policies; while ID fraud is a hassle, you're covered by the banks unless you're culpable.

They tried to sell me this when I called to activate my new card - and didn't like being said no to!! I said I would prefer to talk to my husband about it first, and the woman said that it would be much easier to set it up now and discuss it with my husband later, as payment wouldn't go though for 10 days anyway  I told her a very emphatic no, thank you. This is pretty shameful selling on people's worries about identity theft.
