Tips for cleaning a......

Trophy.

Not sure if it used to be silver and has gone a funny colour or what. I am also not used to winning them and having responsibility for them for a year but last year I did.....twice. One of them needs to be returned this weekend and I am away to defend my title but first I want to be able to return it in good condition and nice and clean.

Any tips for what to use before I go out and buy Silvo and Brasso to find out what the cup is actually made from??

Cheers

I used to play in a brass band and although my instruments were never made of Silver or Brass I found that either Silvo or Brasso cleaned without a problem so I would try Silvo. I never dared trying any cheaper alternatives (these instruments cost about £2k!) so am unsure. I do know my dad cleaned electroplate silver with coca cola to get the worst off then finished with Silvo. It might be worth trying (if you have any cola in of course!) with cola on a small area to see if it works.

Tin/Alluminium foil, soda crystals and hot water. Put the tin foil in the bottom of a dish (non metalic), stick in a couple of spoonfuls of soda crystals and cover with enough hot water to submerge your trophy then dunk it in. Works on jewellery, cutlery and all sorts so I don't see why it wouldn't work on this. HTH.

  • I don't know how much it costs, but Lakeland's Miracle Cloth does a good job of cleaning metal. Just don't let it dry out because it will stop working.

  • Thanks for all your hints and tips! Turns out I didn't need to try too hard in the end, Dad had some cleaner in the cupboard left over from all his trophy days and the cup came up a treat! Infact, I handed it back in better condition than what it was when we were presented with it!
