Anyone bought new hair straighteners recently?

I've just had my hair cut and haven't used straighteners for so long that I have no idea where my old pair has gone! As it could be that I've left them at uni, I'm thinking about treating myself to a new pair.

However I've been looking around at reviews but I'd like to get some feedback from real people! So if you've bought some hair straighteners recently then would you mind letting me know which they were and what you think of them?
I've got quite fine hair but there's a lot of it, I've had my hair cut quite short and layered so I don't really need heavy-duty ones but I'd like ones that aren't going to damage my hair too much!

Thanks, Caroline

PS. If this is in the wrong place then sorry but I wasn't sure where else to put it!

Hi, sorry no direct recommendations as my pair as very basic and were on offer in Boots some years ago (can't remember the make!) but when you are looking at them think about where (if there is one) the on/off switch is!

My last pair had it 'on top' of the straightners and when I was doing my hair I kept turning it off  my new pair don't have an on/off which also makes you turn them off at the wall (and I always pull the plug too!)

Thanks Skint_Catt, I've been having a look on Ciao and Amazon but I hadn't realised how many straighteners there were out there...

If your hair is short then go for thin plates, if its long wide plates are quicker (though I find thin plates easy for both - more adaptable than thick though will take longer on long hair.

Sorry just read your hair is quite short, so the thin plates would be perfect. Get ceramic plates which will protect your hair somewhat. Just had a look at mine and they are Remington S2002 (from Boots IIRC) and they are very good. They have x2 protection graphic on them which must mean something  :rotfl:

Do you have a budget? GHD have always been recommended but I think they are expensive for what they are and have always gone for £30 at most.

Oh, and in case you're considering them I wouldn't personally ever try wet2dry straighteners again - they are awful, make your hair frizz and scorch it. Terrible!
  • There's no way I was going to shell out for GHDs! Lol also whilst I was reading through the reviews there seem to be a lot of people out there who don't like them... I went for these in the end:

  • I bought some off Ebay the other day called jolie, i'd heard of them before as people were saying how good they were and that they were as good if not better than ghds. I didn't believe it but needed some hair straighteners so got some anyway as they were only £7.95. They arrived yesterday and are excellent just like ghds and are supposedly made at the same place using the same materials with the same spec but without the name. I very highly recommend these .

i got vidall sassoon ribbon curler ones (straightens and curls!) and they are excellent, vvvvv hot! and about £40.

i mainly use them for straightening. they are temperature controllable so you can set it at the max which is 230 oc or 6 settings below that which are -10 degrees increments (hope thats made sense!)

they are perfect for styling too (flick the ends out or curl them under) and for shaping fringes too.

    recommended!!!
