Thanks

  • Make sure you are aware of all the PRO's and CON's about this before you make a decision.

I have thought long and hard about getting this done and decided in the end not to bother.

There is plenty of promotional material about the benefits of cavity insulation out there, but for a view from the other side have a read here http://www.askjeff.co.uk/content.php?id=4

I'm not saying this is correct, merely that you should make a decision based on all the available information.
  • yes go for it! its great!

you can even get a grant (regardless of income) got a semi detached house, and it was £450 with £150 cash back. so cost me £300 and it should pay back within 18months.

there is a web site/phone number to get in contact (dont have it with me, shall see if i have it in work).

they have a list of approved cavity wall companies and you have to go with them.

i have noticed a huge difference in heating the house, the heating is one for 3hrs a day (6pm-9pm) and the temp in the house is about 24c, at 7am it drops to 21c, and at 5pm its about 20c.

We had ours done with polystyrene beads.

An excellent job (but you need the roofspace done too to maximise the benefit.)

As above we qualified for a grant leaning the 'real' cost about £265. (That was about 5 years ago.)

If you're in mid Ulster PM me & I'll give you the details of the firm we used - great to deal with: arrived on time, no mess or disruption and they even filled in the grant application - all I had to do was sign it.

Once upon a time I propped up a hi fi speaker with a block of polystyrene foam; it made the plastic covering of the speaker's wires go hard and brittle.
If you have any house wiring inside the cavity (I do in my house); I wonder if that will go hard and brittle too.

There are offers on the net of firms offering to do whole houses for less than 150 GBP, because they are subsidised by National Power (I think it is a penance that NP is forced to pay for having old high carbon coal power stations).

    Harry.

There are also reports of houses where there is NO vertical damp barrier where the cavity is "closed" round doors and windows. In these circumstances dampness, that would have evaporated from the thin half brick that is between the window/door frame and the cavity, may soak through to the back of the plaster inside the room; then in a few years the plaster starts to fall off the sides of the window opening.
That said, I have 4 relatives, who have had their cavities filled and none report any problems in about 30 years. (1 styrene and 3 fibre).
