My (limited) understanding is that everyone is entitled to a written notice of dismissal stating the reason. Could you try asking for one?

Not everyone - only if employed for more than a year and if they request it.

However, whether or not they ask for it, an employee dismissed during (a) her pregnancy or her ordinary or additional maternity leave or (b) his or her ordinary or additional adoption leave is entitled to a written statement of the reasons regardless of length of service. I don't this applies in danelliott's case.
  • Was the 1 weeks unpaid "holiday" agreed in advance or did you just phone/not show up

If its the latter your in breach and will probably wave goodbye to your notice
  • I wrote in the diary AND they were well aware more than 2 weeks in advance of my time off, If i had just "not turnt in" then i would not be moaning because it would basically be my not turning up with no reason wouldnt it? and i would be suprised if i went back after a week to find my job still open for my if i did this

    Did they authorise it

Id be amazed if any employer simply allowed employees to write holidays down and thats it, otherwise they would all go at the same time

Unless it was agreed to formally they will just claim you breached the contract and are sacked for gross misconduct

In that case the best you will get is your wages worked
  • Yes it was authorised, we even spoke about it prior to me going discussing who awould be running the kitchen in my absense AND what needed doing while i was gone.
