hiccoughs

I'll try to keep this as brief as I can..but basically I am looking for suggestions on what to ask for or what to try for my father's hiccoughs.
This is not just a case of a few hiccoughs, he has hiccoughed almost continually now for 3 weeks, often being sick as well. He is in a residential home (not nursing home) as he had a stroke and they have notified the GP who has prescribed, anti depressents which didn't work. GP also tried another drug that is used for to calm violent patients (and has been indicated for use in severe hiccoughs) and that failed to work.
He also had a consultant apppointment at the hospital and we asked about the hiccoughs then, but we were told there is no real way of knowing what causes them and they should eventually just stop of their own accord.
Can anyone suggest anything I can try, or is there anything else I am likely to need to worry about with these hiccouphs? At the moment all the GP can suggest is going back to see the consultant, but that isn't likely to be for another 3 months and trips to the hospital also upset my father so I would prefer not to have to take him if I can help it.

i am wracking my brains as my DH had hiccups while doing chemo and was prescribed something and it worked. this sounds useless information but i am suggesting that there is something they can do depending on the cause. it may be due to acid reflux, they can prescribe ppi's (anti reflux), or hiatus hernia?
i would not accept that 'they will stop' etc, thats lazy. not you btw! the doctors.0 -

Apparently he is a little worse today as he slept poorly as the hiccoughs were so bad, thank you for asking.
We've started on the old wives remedies (thanks for the links Queensway boy). Many of them we can't do due to my fathers health, but they tried a little vinegar on a spoon, and he didn't like it so hiccoughed it all back up again. I'm taking in peanut butter tomorrow..well it is worth a try!
He is already on anti reflux medicine and the dose can't go up anymore, so we've had to rule that one out.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
