  • I assume you're keeping it simple with the business year end being 5 April?

So, for the period from Sep 2007 to April 2008 - the relevant figures go on your tax return for April 2008.

You then pay the tax you owe in January 2009 and half that amount is then paid in July 2009 as an "on account" payment of the tax due in 2008/2009.

But when is that tax return actually due in, and when do they send it to you? I am in the same boat (registered a bit earlier than OP) and it is doing my head in. I read and read the date regs and it makes no sense to me.

I am going to phone the Rev today to get the word from the horse's mouth.

By 30 September (following the end of the tax year) if you want HMRC to calculate the tax you owe and tell you.

Or by 31 January if you calculate your own tax.

You will be sent a notice telling you to file your tax return soon after 6 April. I no longer get a return - just a notice to file.

Handy reference of key dates here

God bless you DFC. Of course being an OCD type I had to call up anyway, but you're completely right.
