I always bring Parmesan cheese and salami back from Italy and some pecorino cheese from Sardinia, also some of their wonderful torrone (nougat)
In Holland I have tasted the best smoked mackerel ever, but haven't brought any home...there is also a type of spiced bun I bought there in the market...spice is Kaneel, for which I can't remember the English at the moment, but its a tasty bun.

IIRC, from when I lived in Holland, kaneel is Dutch for cinnamon.

When I go to Auchon in Calais:

    Tins of preserved duck (confit)

    Dijon mustard - much cheaper

    tins of flageolot beans

    tins of peas and carrots

    tins of brown lentils

small tetra packs of beurre blanc sauce

small tetra packs sterilised cream (they freeze well)

    jars of goose fat

    small tins of pate

packs of grated 'gruyere' type cheese - cheap and portion controlled.

    stock cubes

fougasse (bread with bacon and cheese - they don't always have it)
  • from last year's holiday to Spain I bought back hot smoked paprika and saffron as they're much cheaper over there. also bought back loads of tins of olives stuffed with anchovies.
