Wrong NI Number

Hello - I just rang the IR to check if I need to complete a self assessment form (turns out I dont as I only started working as a contractor in September). What they did say though was the National Insurance number I have isn't the one they have on their systems. I've checked my payslips and p45 from previous job and my NI is definately the one I gave them so any ideas why they would say it is wrong? How do I find out?

  • Hello, to get confirmation of your NINO call NI registrations on 08459157006, they will issue a letter of confirmation out. OR... contact a jobcenter plus office go in person with as much ID as possible and they should be anle to trace it on their DCI system.

    Good luck!

According to the HMRC website the phone number for NINO queries is 0845 600 0643.

Bear in mind that just because an NINO is on a payslip or P45 does not make it correct. How did your employer get your NINO ? Usually from a previous P45 or you telling them what it is.
  • Its defo 0845 915 7006.. I work there :(
  • Got that 'Sunday feeling' at the minute, if i can remember what the other number is for ill be back!!!!
  • Ive remembered..... 0845 6000 643 is an appointment line for people with no national insurance number... like a foreign national for example. Phew!

I recently became a contractor so I sent my p45 from my previous job to my accountant - I have checked my copy of the p45 and it has the same number as I am using at the moment and I checked my payslips from my previous employer (of 7 years) and it is the same number.

Can only suggest you phone the number given by Janie above.

Out of interest the NINO you have on the payslips isn't in the format TN followed by 6 numbers which are your DOB followed by a M or F ?

I'll give them a call then.

No - my number doesn't start TN.
