how to use a carpet cleaner?

afternoon all
I have searched threads but cant find any pointers for using a carpet cleaner, i have been lent a green henry hoover to clean my carpet but doing know how to use is - should it be hot or cold water? i presume i just put the water and the cleaner in the drum and shut the lid?? there is two buttons on the lid which looks like ahem (suck and blow)
any pointers i would be glad to hear
