Cleaning jet jewellery?

Does anyone have any tips on cleaning jet jewellery? I have some very intricately carved pieces that I thought I might put on ebay? They had quite a lot of 'gunge',
, when I looked at them under a magnifying glass. I Googled and followed the suggestions to use a little washing up liquid in warm water and a baby's toothbrush, then drying with a soft cloth. Some of the 'gunge' has gone but not all and I don't want to scrub too hard. Also, the jet now has a slightly brownsh tinge to it and looks very dull. Any ideas as to how to get the pieces looking more presentable?
Many thanks in advance
