Hi all, been a lurker for a while and I can see you guys have lots of knowlege and experience.
I wonder if anyone can sort this out please?
I took voluntary redundancy at the end of July 2007. In accordance with Revenue regulations most of this was tax free and my employer applied tax to the relevant portion on my final wage slip which included my payoff.
I was considering self employment but as a back up started looking for work and immediately applied for Jobseekers' allowance - at the time I apparently should have not been paid anything as volunteers for redundancy were ineligible although this rule was relaxed soon after. IIRC I got "overpaid" three weeks money which they have not yet claimed back from me.
At the end of September I changed plans and managed to get a place in teacher training and am receiving all the relevant loans, grants and bursaries associated with this (which I understand are not taxable) but have no other income.
My question is, am I eligible for a tax rebate from April to July 2007?

Any rebate relates to the whole year, not a part of it.
The JSA probable over-payment is an issue which should be resolved. If JSA was properly paid, that is included in your pay for the year.0 -
To expand on what Little Voice says, the Job Centre should make a tax refund at the end of the tax year, but they are very poor at doing this properly, so you may have to apply direct to HMRC once you get your P60 from the Job Centre.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Thanks, I've got my P60 from my main job. I forgot to say that when I left my job I had been on loan to another organisation and they put me on the payroll only in order to pay me a taxable lunch allowance (I continued to get my wages from my main employer and my hosts then reimbursed them with on costs). So there is that small amount of income as well to consider, for which I have only just had a "BR" code notification for 07/08 from HMRC.
I don't anticipate earning taxable income till at least shortly after the new tax year starts, so I guess I will need to make some enquiries of HMRC. Thanks again.0 -

Very doubtful .. you (should) only get a P60 from an employer you're actively with at the tax year end (5th April). Probably a P45 you hold .. and which is potentially inaccurate pending the jsa resolution? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
