I once saw in a magazine (Prima or Essentials or one of those) a knitting pattern for making a hard-wearing shopping bag by knitting up carrier bags. I kid you not!

Has anyody got this 'knitting' pattern?

Would be a good way to use all my old carriers, and would also be money saving as I won't have to buy a proper shopping bag.
Also I need a nice shopping bag - I'm thinking French chic - just in case I don't get to knit one!

  • :T That's it, that's what my Aunt used to make. They look very nice when they are made up. I bet you could crochet them too.

tesco have recycle boxes to put plastic bags into.
    i always reuse mine.
the price of cude oil has gone up so shops make bags more flimsy and they fall apart so quickly that most new bags only get used once

Not so good if the carriers aren't recyclable. Somerfield's are and the Co-op - not sure about the others. There is no doubt we must try and do something to save all this 'plastic' rubbish going into land-fill sites. I have a 'shopping bag' from an animal welfare charity which is useful and saves a bit, I suppose.

Bin liners not so good, agreed, I re-cycle what I can. The bags going back, I hope is worthwhile and they don't just bin them.

We use them as bin liners. I've got a few of those linen bags you get in continental markets - i always make sure i've got one in my bag - plus i have a couple of free shoppers from mags. If I'm asked if I want a bag in a shop I only take one if my shopper is full - some people would take them for a packet of chewing gum in my experience.......
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

We have one of those Bettaware plastic things you can clip a bag to that makes it into a bin with a lid. It's inside the under-sink cupboard which is much nicer than having a bin out in the kitchen.

We use some as bin liners, but for shopping I mostly take my German "green bags" (They're not green literally, but are cotton shopping bags)
My grandmother who is 96 is the Queen of the Plastic Bags! She puts everything in plastic bags. Even when she goes on holiday, all her undies etc are in individual plastic bags. It is a bit of a standing joke in the family.
One year for Christmas I made her a crochet doily, out of a supermarket carrier bag cut into a long strip of plastic!

I try to keep a few in the car for when I go to Aldis. There is a site on the web - if you google it on plastic bag crafts it should come up called Paulas plastic bag craft - sorry couldn't manage to do the link. On it are lots of ideas like mats, wreaths, smowmen, christmas tree angels etc. incredible ideas.
