Wasn't too sure where to post this but looking for a little bit of consumer advice please
My parents bought a computer less than 12 months ago from PC world now it looks like it is on the blink as when you switch it on it has a fuzzy display which looks like the normal start up as it is a compaq logo that is displayed but it isn't going to the start up screen. I (think?) that maybe the graphics card might have gone, anyway my dad can't find a receipt but did pay on his credit card so can get proof from them.
Am i right in thinking that he should be covered with a 12 months warranty? Should he just call up pc world to replace/fix the computer?
Anything else i need to let them know?
Cheers

Yes he should contact the credit card company. If the goods are faulty then under the Sale of Goods Act you do not need to prove where/when you purchased the goods, but the supplier is entitled to ask you to prove that you did buy the goods from them. Therefore proof from the CC co would be useful.

Is there anything on the PC to indicate it came from PC World? If so, just take it in to the local store. If not, then take it anyway - but with the CC statement to show that you bought from them.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0

yes i have just had my laptop fixed and hadnt got the reciept, i am just waiting for the parts and it to be returned to me. but i got the work done without a reciept and no proof as we paid cash for it.
so with proof you should get what ever it needs, done

There is a thread on here somewhere (I think in the Vent board) as someone was unhappy that PC World insisted on taking their name and address. Apparently their defence was that it allows them to look up customers for the sake of warrenty.
May be worth aksing them - perhaps your father gave his details and the transaction is on their database?0 -

Only if that does not work should they contact the credit card company?0 -
Surely they should contact PC World first to give them the opportunity to repair the computer.

Forewarned is forearmed, as they say. Hence why it is good to check out ones rights before putting oneself in the hands of those who often do not know what they are talking about.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

If you contact either your local PC World store or the customer helpline (0844 5610000), they will be able to find your reciept on the computer system. They keep reciepts in store, as it were, for 2 years, but Head Office/ Customer services keep them on file for 5 years.
If the worst comes to the worst you can contact the manufacturer, but this usually takes longer and will often send you back to PC World anyway.
This is one of the few times that it is good for them to take your details! If you can take the machine into your branch they should have an in store repair team, or they can often send one of the 'Tech Guys' to your home.Lightbulb moment: August 2007. Debts totalling £15,634.
