Do John Lewis do refunds?

Ok, I'll admit it: I was stupid. I bought my mum a wireless keyboard for Xmas, except that it wasn't actually wireless! For some reason I just assumed it was.

I went to swap it for a wireless one last week, but they didn't have any (at least any under £80!) and weren't sure when they were getting new stock in. I can, however, buy one somewhere (anywhere!) else for quite a good price.

I know I should've asked there and then, but do John Lewis refund because you've changed your mind (obviously they don't have to). The box was briefly opened (that's how we found out it wasn't wireless!) but it's all as new.

To further complicate things, I don't have the receipt (my insurance company has it - long story), but I do have a credit card bill showing the transaction on it.

Any experiences? Replies merely confirming that I am stupid will not be tolerated :D

I found JL is one of the best - I actually returned an unused panama hat I bought for my Dad - something like 9 months after showed receipt and John Jewis refunded in full no questions. Great service!
Also...Proof of purchase on CC is as good as a receipt

Thanks very much - I didn't want to drive into Kingston for a futile trip. Looks like it might be worthwhile doing it.

How long ago did you buy it? I think they have a 28 day refund policy, provided the item is returned in undamaged packaging. As for you not having a receipt, I'm not sure, but if you can prove you purchased it from them within the last 28 days you should be OK.

Hmm, can't remember. It was in mid-December so probably about 28 days ago! I was waiting to get the credit card bill through initially, as I don't have the receipt (as I said, my insurance company have got it and despite 2 requests to send it back to me they haven't done so). Then last week I went to do an exchange but they didn't have anything suitable.

Anyway, I'll try this weekend and see if I get anywhere. If not, it's my own fault so no point in complaining about it!
  • I think that if it is a Christmas Pressie it is different. We have just sent my husbands SatNav back - it was a pressie from me.

I explained to customer services about it and they were fine.

The back of the receipt says "within a reasonable time (usually 28 days)". So you will probably be fine being a few days late espcially as we have just had christmas.

I Took something back the other day which would have been the 28th day and it was fine. I don't think they even looked at the date on the receipt.

In the end my wife decided she wanted that keyboard so I just bought a new one for my mum!

    All this effort for nothing!

    Thanks very much anyway.
