How to tell if oven is self clean?

I just broke all the rules in the book and bought a killer strength oven cleaner. It says not to use on self clean surfaces but I have no idea if my oven has these.

Do they look a certain way?

Help!

My 'self-clean' surfaces are dark grey/black and are rough to the touch.

I'm not sure if thats standard though?
  • That sounds like mine - the shelves slide into slots in a kind of inner wall instead of into metal tracks attached to 'proper' walls.

I think I will wait and phone them tomorrow (there is a number on the box) to see if I can use the cleaning stuff on the rest of the oven if I make sure I don't get any on the side bits.

I think the stuff is so full of a chemicals I'm worried if I do it wrong I'll end up having to buy a new oven!

If you go on the manufacturers website (who makes the cooker) it'll usually tell you if it is etc

If it's just the bottom which is grimey they usually aren't 'self cleaning' and can get icky if not cleaned straight after a spill, applying the stuff with a cloth carefully is usually a better option (with gloves on) then once you have it clean I'd invest in an oven liner so don't need to ever use the nasty strong stuff again. Or just take it back, clean it with something else.
One day I might be more organised...........

Yes, thats it, exactly. Sounds like you have a self-cleaning oven.

Can you research the make/model online? The manufacturers website might have the info?

Useful info that. The fan on our oven has been playing up...........not working as it should but we've found that whacking it on high temp. seems to burn off whatever grease has built up ...for the moment anyway.
Have to look in the manual to see how you do a 'self clean cycle' Had a look yesterday trying to find out what to do if the fan doesn''t work and didn't find anything about that nor anything I had to do for self cleaning. Just said it was self cleaning -but only up to a point. Didn't mean it doesn't need cleaning ever -oh what a boon if it did !!

Oh - an oven liner sounds a great idea - what is this and where can I get one?

Bought mine in the £1 shop last year :rotfl: I don't know if they still do them. I had one from Kleeneze sure they are cheaper than £10 aswell, which was good also (they have a website) Seen them on Ebay aswell.

Works really well, I spilt half a shepherds pie, just pulled it out, wiped in and put it back, worth buying, definately!
