I freeze the bread from the BM and it's fine. DH likes white bread and I like wholemeal, so I make one of each, cut them in half, then freeze half and use half of each loaf.

I have a lock n lock bread box as advised by the people on this site, and the bread stays fresh until we finish it, which is amazing as I am not a great bread eater.
  • I eat Nibmle bread as am doing Slimming World. So I just take out 2 slices in the morning & make the sarnie. By lunch it has defrosted & is lovely. Not at all soggy.

It makes sense if you won't use the whole loaf before it goes off.

I go to my local Sainsbury at about 7pm and buy loads of reduced bread and bakery products and freeze. Haven't used my BM for months! (being lazy)

I use a Warburtons Toastie too. The paper doesn't rip if you're careful. I have to freeze it because sometimes I eat a loaf a week, and sometimes only a couple of slices, so if I don't freeze it then it gets wasted.

My tip for defrosting is to take out however many slices you need, and put them in individual polythene sandwich bags. Just leave on the worktop for 10 minutes or so. The bag stops them drying out, and they defrost quickly in individual slices so there's no need to microwave unless you're in a serious hurry. Obviously, the sandwich bags should be reused. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I also freeze bread and just take out what I need. I use the defrost button on my microwave to defrost any I want immediately.

pigpen - I used to get good deals on bread at tesco but haven't for ages and have forgotten the 'good' times when they are reduced. i used to also buy loaves for 4p or so. When do you go?
    cheers

i have frozen all different bread over the years and it never taste quite right. it always seems drier and firmer than fresh. any ideas why ?

i have been buying hovis at £1.04 a loaf each day fresh from our local shop as it is really soft and tastes really nice. lately tho i've discovered the toastie loaves are only 80p so i buy these.

would be fab to be able to save money on bread as we do have alot of it. but i can't stand eating bread which isn't soft.

    all ideas would be fab.
  • There is another apparent advantage to keeping the freezer full of cheap stuff, like bread. It reduces the amount of air you are paying to freeze.
