It isnt a single purchase, you buy a few different bits, it all depends on how far you want to go and how much you want to spend.

bargain bin, buy an inexpensive 32"/40"/42" tv at most it will be 720p HD grab a DVD player with surround sound in a single box and it will be ok. proberbly cost maybe about £800-£1000

spend a little more, buy a nice 42" or maybe 50" plasma that is 1080p (I picked up a panasonic TH-50PZ70 PED from sound and vision in farnworth last week for £1350 most others sell it for £1800) buy a HD source blu ray is looking to be winning the format war over HD DVD or a PS3 then buy a reasonable 5.1/6.1/7.1 suround system. your looking at maybe £2500 maybe a bit more.

blow the kids inheretance and annoy the hell out of the neighbours (my choice)
depending on how big you want to go 50" or bigger screen the panny is awesome I was playing a few hd videos on it from my xbox 360 earlier. You can get larger plasmas but the price really rockets so you may want to look at a projector again 1080p projectors are expensive but if you have the room you can go huge with the image size. A blu ray source. then you can spend as much as you want to on a surround system. I spent £800 on my sub alone receiver/amp £550. I played a few shops off against each other to get the prices down I spent £2500 on speakers, and an amp not includeing the sub and that wasnt that excessive I could have spent 4 times that if I had been really stupid.

People go on about their surround system and tell me they spent £180 on the whole lot and they crank it up to the max and it sounds really bad, I can't turn mine up too much as the neighbours over the street moan about the noise. Next door asked me to turn it down once becasue stuff on her fireplace was falling off. I took it as a complement, she then came in and watched a film and doesnt mind anymore.

What is it your looking for? whats your budget?
You can get projectors for £300-£400 now but they have a long throw (need a lot of space to get a big picture) and proberbly be low resolution, its all about do you want to be replaceing it again in the near future or not. I always try to buy the latest technology then the chances of it being completly out of date should be a few years in to the future. I would rather spend £600 now and it last a bit than spend £300 now and another £300 in 18 months time but not everyone thinks the same as me. so give us an idea of what your looking for and budget I will see whats available for you.
