Thanks everyone! I think I will give it a go! If its still there by Saturday that is (work full time!). Its only around the corner from my house so hopefully no delivery factor, I'll just carry it with hubby (if I manage to get it at a good price) ;o)

If there is no delivery factor, make a point of saying that when haggling even if they deliver for free anyway make a point of saying "...and for that price I'd take it away myself"

If I were you I'd be really cheeky and say the most you were looking to spend is £500 then if they can squeeze £600 or £650 out of you they think they have got one over on you and everyones happy!

When it comes to haggling silence is golden! Give them the price you are willing to start negotiating at and then let them do the talking, if its not what you want to hear then stay quiet.

Dont be afraid of walking away empty handed either, they should be more afraid of you leaving empty handed than you should be.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
  • Yeah, you should haggle if you want an extra 10-15% off.

Have you tried looking for a dining set in an auction? You often get real bargains if you can transport the larger stuff.

we went to dreams the bed place and got a new wooden bed for us and some bunk beds for the girls, my OH just came out with the fact we would be paying with cash and wanted something off the price - in the end we got free delivery of 35 quid and some pillows and duvets for free, first time my OH has ever done anything like that.
coupon over here, coupon over there, every crack filled with coupons even down there
    (meaning under the buggy lol):D

Definitely. Even if you only say 'is that the best you can do for me?' to the salesperson or 'my budget for this is £X'. In these sorts of stores the salespeople may well be on commission and will be prepared to be flexible to get the sale. It wouldn't hurt to suggest you're choosing between this and another similar item in another store.

If they can't discount on price, sometimes they can 'chuck something in' or offer free delivery.
  • Thought I'd give you all a quick update! We went into the shop, said our budget was £700. They said no to that but they would drop it to £800. We then ummed a bit and said we'd be prepared to go up to £750 and could take it that day. But it was still a no they wouldn't budge.
I did wonder afterwards for the sake of £50 I'd have had a lovely new table (and it was/is lovely!) but I'm glad we didn't now, although I would still love the table it was more than we wanted to pay really.
Almost 3 weeks on and the table is still in the window. I walk past it every day! Not been reduced any further though :rotfl:
Feeding my 'sheep' money box with any £2 coins I get - no idea how much is in there will empty it when full

We bought a pushchair from mothercare last Sunday , wanted to buy it online due to 15% off over £120 spend and free delivery. They didnt have stock online for over 5 weeks , so when they had stock in the shop I said would like a 15% discount.Dont usually haggle at all but felt that after reading all the comments on MSE , I ought to develop a Brass-Neck !!.After speaking to a line manager then the shop manager they offered me £10 off (the pushchair was £130).Although its only a small discount , it made me feel 10 feet tall.Ithen went to Debenhams and haggled a pair of RJR leather gloves to £7-50 from £30.:T .Now I feel I could haggle on almost anything.

definitely ask for a discount! The worst they can do is say no.

You should always try to haggle on jewelry. There is typically a huge markup on this stuff and I've always been able to get a discount.

If it's still in the window I'd be tempted to pop in again and make the same offer (or maybe offer £20 more or so). They might be glad to get rid at this stage :)
