They're after bank details. They may not ask for them on the first instance, but they will.
These are usually sent out by criminal gangs in places such as Nigeria by very clever con men / women.
The e mail addresses are either bought wholesale from places like call centres (such as the recent newspaper investigation in India) or are randomly generated.

I keep mine under the stairs, for instances just as this"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I read in our local paper about some brave local people who have decided to go public that they lost over £100K on a Nigerian e-mail scam. These scams exist because there are innocents out there who actually believe they can make some money...still raining0

I can't believe people are that naive, I think the people who send money to these scammers are incredibly stupid and greedy.0 -

Unfortunately, some people are just that naive. I'm trying to put this kindly....remember, not everyone has as high an IQ as the majority of us, which does make them extremely vunerable.
Other people can be just as vunerable through age or personal circumstance, or even desperation.
Yes, you are absolutely right, at the end of the day, greed plays a major part, but greed is a part of human nature, which these vultures prey on, and the fact that anyone would try and tie a religious theme into this typical scam to me makes it even more sickening."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
