Anyone who is insured through Hughes & Co in Newtownards should look at their renewal notices carefully. The directors have introduced a £25 administration fee for renewing your policy, I had heard about this but it was confirmed this week when my wife got her car insurance renewal. Despite being with them several years they have refused to waive this fee so an alternative (and better) quote has been arranged elsewhere. They will be losing all my family insurance as renewal dates fall due. I understand they are now allowed to do this by the regulatory bodies, more blatant profiteering as they already have commission on the premiums. I would urge a boycott of this company.

I stopped using Hughes and company some time ago as I found their quotes to be a bit on the high side compared to other companies.

I agree with you BigAl, if more people voted with their feet and walked away, then Hughes and company might reconsider charging this renewal fee.

I think part of the problem is that the insurance market is becoming much more competitive therefore the commissions that used to be there are probably being eroded both by the underwriter and the customer. Possibly in an attempt to give the lowest possible quotes they wipe out their commission to give the quote and then add the £25 fixed admin charge (maybe that is the only money they make)????

As an aside it is a bit like FLYmayBE - they give very low prices but then slap on a load of 'charges and taxes' - recently I was quoted £76 (ish) for two return flights that were sold as costing £0.

I have been with J N Bailie for many years now (both cars) and as soon as the renewals come through I will check the price on the web (usually elephant, sometimes quinn-direct - but they won't quote one of my cars). I thne contact J N Bailie and they will do their best for me. I am happy to stay with them as long as they are within £10-20 ... I love the internet but prefer to have someone to shout at if something goes worng :D
