my boyfriend has a lovely silk tie, which has sentimental value as it was bought by his parents as a gift to celebrate getting his first graduate job.
Yesterday he grabbed a bunch of things from the linen basket, not realising the tie was hidden amongst them, and it has come out of the washer ruined. The foam that makes it keep its shape inside is all crinkled, creased and twisted. We just can't think how to salvage it...i dried it with a weight attached to the bottom in the hope of it straightnening out but it didn't do any good, and i am worried to iron it incase it melts the foam (!?)
If anyone has any ideas i will be so grateful..it would be such a shame for this to be rendered unwearable

Hello Starlite
If the tie is so special maybe it would be worth spending a little to return it to its former glory?
Don't subject the tie to further washing, drying or ironing. Look in the yellow pages for a dressmaker and get them to unpick the tie, replace the filling material and make it good as new again.
Don't leave your special silk garments in the linen basket.........just in case your boyfriend decides to help with the laundry again.;)10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. ooh thats a great idea..hadn't really thought of doing that as I usually try to take on any mending myself. Any ideas how much it should cost as money is a little tight at the moment.Membre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0

Anything that is special to me, or that is hand wash only I always put in a seperate washing pile (or hide in a spare draw). That way if OH decides to do some washing there is no chance that this sort of stuff can get mixed up. And yes, I do this because of experience....he washed a nice wollen jumper of mine and managed to shrink it.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

I know what you mean..I would have definitely noticed it, but my boyfriend just happily grabs a pile and shoves it in, not bothering to empty pockets or even roll down shirt sleeves..he heMembre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0

No idea, but, phone around and ask them to quote you, then you'll have an idea and either: a) have it done if affordable b) plan to have it done when you can afford it more comfortably.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

One thing I never do is buy new ties - I always get them from charity shops for 50p to a couple of pounds, because sooner or later they end up with soup/ink/fraying etc on them.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
Yes! this is one of only two new ties my boyfriend has, if you check often you can get some really lovely ties in charity shops, and they look no different from new.
just called our local dry cleaners/ mending shop and they quoted me £10...very steep, but I guess it will be worth it.Membre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0 -
If you can mend, you can probably fix the tie. You only need new interfacing. John Lewis has a great stock, but any local haberdashers will have it.
A silk tie, hand finished would be quite somethingWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
I wish I had posted here when I ruined my son's tie. I should have thought about my friend who is an excellent seamstress and could repair it for me as described above.0

If my boyf ever did laundry ( ) he'd do the same, im forever unrolling shirt sleeves and putting socks the right way out etc etc.... Nightmare!!
My ex boyf's mum has a great system, she used to have two laundry baskets, one for light stuff, one for dark, and a little teeny one for handwash and silk etc - the boys never touched it, nor probably even knew what it was for (- boys) , but she never lost a delicate piece through the wash again.... If I had more money, Id go buy more laundry baskets - I hate Sorting!
